Diabetes Awareness, start to finish.
This annual refresher training covers the essential knowledge and skills you need to support residents with diabetes. You will learn about the types of diabetes, how residents are assessed and their care planned, how to recognise and respond to complications like hypoglycaemia, and how residents are empowered to manage their own condition wherever safely possible. This is the same module CareStream subscribers get, written for care settings rather than adapted from a generic course. It runs about 48 minutes and ends with a 30 question assessment.
- Understanding Diabetes and Its Types
Diabetes is a long term condition where there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood because the body cannot produce enough insulin or use it properly.
- Assessment and Person Centred Care
Diabetes care should follow person centred care principles.
- Levels of Support and Care Patterns
Assessment identifies different patterns of care based on what each resident needs.
- Individual Care Plans and Key Components
Every person with diabetes should have an individual care plan agreed between the person (or relative), GP and care staff.
- Blood Glucose Monitoring and When Unwell
Most residents with diabetes take blood glucose levels at varying frequencies.
- Recognising and Managing Hypoglycaemia
Hypoglycaemia means low blood glucose and is a serious short term complication of diabetes.
- Recognising and Responding to Hyperglycaemia
Hyperglycaemia means blood glucose has risen too high, and it usually creeps up over hours or days rather than minutes.
- Foot Care, Skin Care and Preventing Complications
Diabetes can damage nerves and blood supply, so a resident may not feel a blister, and small wounds can heal slowly and become serious.

What your team will be able to do.
- Describe the two main types of diabetes and how each is typically managed
- Explain how residents with diabetes are assessed and how individualised care plans are created in your workplace
- Recognise the signs of hypoglycaemia and describe the correct response in line with your organisation's policies and procedures
- Identify the key components of diabetes care planning including monitoring, diet, medication and annual reviews
- Apply person centred principles to support residents in self managing their diabetes wherever safely possible
Diabetes Awareness in facts.
About 48 minutes, 8 lessons
30 questions, pass mark 80%
Every year
None, completed fully online
What staff come away with
Type 1 diabetes usually needs insulin injections while Type 2 is often managed with lifestyle changes and medication first
Each resident should be assessed to determine how much they can safely self care and supported to maintain control wherever possible
Every diabetes care plan must include details of how to manage hypoglycaemia and what to do when the resident is unwell
Blood glucose monitoring is especially important when a resident is unwell as illness can cause rapid changes
Hypoglycaemia needs quick action: give fast acting sugar then longer acting carbohydrate, stay with the person, and call 999 if they become unconscious
Each resident has an individual care plan agreed with them, their GP and care staff, including a designated key worker
Three steps, and nothing to set up.

How long does Diabetes Awareness training take?
About 48 minutes, across 8 short lessons, followed by a 30 question assessment with a pass mark of 80%. Staff can stop and pick up where they left off.
What does the Diabetes Awareness module cover?
8 lessons: Understanding Diabetes and Its Types, Assessment and Person Centred Care, Levels of Support and Care Patterns, Individual Care Plans and Key Components, Blood Glucose Monitoring and When Unwell, Recognising and Managing Hypoglycaemia, Recognising and Responding to Hyperglycaemia and Foot Care, Skin Care and Preventing Complications. Each one pairs the teaching with a care scenario and a quick check.
How often do staff need to refresh Diabetes Awareness?
CareStream sets this module so it renews every year. Staff and managers are reminded before a certificate lapses, so the refresher is booked before the gap appears.
Is Diabetes Awareness completed fully online?
Yes. It is knowledge based, so staff complete the lessons and the assessment online and receive their certificate at the end. There is no practical sign-off.
Do I need a CareStream subscription to buy this?
No. This page exists precisely so you do not. You buy the licences you need, your staff complete the module in the CareStream hub, and that is the end of it. There is no trial to start, no card kept on file, and no subscription that begins quietly afterwards.
If you later decide you want the full platform, anything your staff have already completed carries across into your account.
What does one licence actually cover?
One licence covers one named member of staff for this one module, including the lesson, the assessment, any follow-up questions triggered by a wrong answer, and their certificate. Licences are not shared between people, because the completion record has to belong to an individual to be worth anything at inspection.
How quickly can staff start?
Immediately. The licences are on your account as soon as the payment clears, and staff get their invite the moment you add them. There is no onboarding call and no setup period.
Can staff complete it in another language?
Yes. Each staff member has a first language on their profile, and the lesson, the questions and the feedback all arrive in it. They answer in that language too. What you see as a manager stays in English, so the record reads the same whoever completed it.
What if someone fails the assessment?
Nothing is lost. A wrong answer triggers a short follow-up lesson on that specific point, and they retry it. The record shows the improvement from the first attempt to the latest, which is stronger evidence than a single pass mark, because it shows the gap was found and closed.
Can I buy for more than one service?
Yes. Buy the total number of licences you need and allocate them across your services when you add staff. If you are licensing for a group and want an invoice rather than a card payment, get in touch and we will raise one.
Licence any of these the same way.
Same price, same terms, no subscription needed.
